From July 15 to July 21 of 2018, Prof. SHENG Weimin, Deputy Dean of the School of Mathematical Sciences, MS. YAO Chen, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, and Prof. LI Song led the School of Mathematical Sciences, ZJU delegation to pay a visit to National University of Singapore. Prof. ZHU Chengbo held a pretty warm welcome ceremony and arranged several activities to improve friendly relationship between two institutes.
In the welcome ceremony, Prof. ZHU briefly introduced the development of NUS and the Department of Mathematics. Department of Mathematics, NUS includes four majors, which are fundamental mathematics, applied mathematics, data science & analysis and quantitative finance. As 21st century coming, the mathematics department always ranks within 20th stably. From 2010 to now, Professors of mathematics department of NUS have published nearly 20 papers in four most famous mathematics magazines, which occupies a high level worldwide. They have brilliant accomplishment in their research fields. What’s more, they are able to be responsible for the edition of some famous academic magazines, and achieve a high level in publishing papers. Many of them have been invited to give a report on ICM. Especially, Prof. ZHU introduced the project of applying doctors in NUS, and gave highly praise to doctors graduated from ZJU and encourage our students to apply to associated doctor of NUS. After that, on behalf of the delegation, Prof. SHENG expressed thanks to the Department of Mathematics, NUS, he also expressed hope of establishing a deeper cooperation and communication with NUS and exchanged gifts with Prof.ZHU to show sincerity of both sides.
In the following days, Prof.Zhu arranged some meaningful and easy-understanding lectures for the delegation. Prof. Min Dai, Prof. De-Qi Zhang, Prof. Ton Kim Chuan and Prof. Xinliang An from NUS gave four research reports about finance mathematics, algebraic geometric, control & optimization and General Relativity. Our students also went studying and communicating with groups from Department of Statistics, Operation & Analysis Center and Data Science Center.
While communicating with Department of Statistics, the delegation from ZJU had a long talk with several NUS’s students graduated from universities in China. Through the talk, our students were able to learn about the teachers, scientific research strength, content and direction of researches in detail. Several students of us took great interest in the doctor project of statistics department of NUS.
In the morning of July 20, accompanied by Prof.ZHU, the delegation visited Operation &Analysis Center and Data Science Center. The two centers held some well-planned lectures and also arranged several doctors to share their research titles with the delegation. Until now, the one-week communication activity successfully finished in this way. Our ZJUers not only heard nearly ten lectures, but also deeply knew about NUS. We look forward to making this communication project and other projects between other institute with NUS significant projects in our students’ 4th classes, and hope that we can keep this project in long term.
